BSA Frequently Asked Questions

- How many scouts could you work with at a time?

I can work with 8 Scouts at a time as that’s my anvil limit. However, I have done back-to-back sessions, or multiple sessions a week apart for bigger troops. I have also had people come in who are not scouts but friends and that’s fine with me.

- Would we come to you, or would we need to find a location for you to set up?

I come to you, normally I set up in the parking lot of your weekly meeting spot, but if that’s not an option then we would have to find another area. The rule of thumb for me is about 5 parking spots or 20x30 is plenty of space.

What is a quick overview of what we will do?

We will start with a few talking points, move on to a safety briefing, then each scout will suit up and start hammering. Basic operations will include: tapering, bending, team striking, and the use of a hand punch. Finally, put an oil coating on the piece, sign blue cards, and done!

- Would it fit in our normal meeting time (2 hours)?

kind of, I made this class to fit into a 2-hour session, and it will be done within that time frame. But, if there is a scout that wants to stay a little longer... I can’t deny that!

- How much would it cost?

I have a minimum fee of $250 for up to 5 scouts and $50 a head after that, with an 8-person max for folks wanting to forge. I do recommend parents join if there is space, as frankly, it’s really fun.

What do we make?

The main project is a bottle opener. To get the Merit badge, the bottle opener must work.

Blue cards or Scout book?

I ask that the Scoutmaster or the individual scout come with Blue card(s) ready to be filled out. Scout book is an option, but with larger groups it’s difficult.
